Rene Rivera
Rene has been involved with MHA's Support and Advocacy for Young Adults in Transition (SAYAT) for the past year. He had been homeless for more than two years and was involved in gang activity and drugs. On some occasions Rene was allowed to stay with an uncle but it was not a long-term arrangement. Rene heard about the SAYAT Program while at the Maple Street Shelter, and he eventually found an apartment for rent with roommates. His MHA case manager was able to help him get into Canada College. He is currently a full-time student taking general education courses and plans to get a civil engineering degree someday. Rene works 25-35 hours each week in retail to pay his rent and bills and send money home to El Salvador. He appreciates the weekly emotional support he receives from his case manager to cope with his responsibilities and goals for the future. He is no longer doing drugs and credits his pastor, church members, and bible study for this change. Rene says things are a lot clearer now and he feels his life has been blessed since getting involved with SAYAT and his church. (March 2006)
