Home :: Success Stories :: Sandra - finding a job

The following is a statement by Sandra, given in January 2005.
My name is Sandra. At the age of 19 I became homeless, so I called my doctor and asked him to help me find a place to sleep. The doctor sent his referral to this homeless shelter called Spring Street Shelter. At that time I was currently living in a dormitory with five other women.
When I went to the shelter, about the third day, I enrolled myself in school. Weeks later I started volunteering with the Friendship Centers with Angela. It was really fun getting to know all these great people you meet every day at the Centers. Later, about 2 months, I started looking for a part time job, doing house cleaning. I had no luck finding anything so I started getting really motivated looking for other job options. I ended up finding a part time job at Jack in the Box, which I really didn't like, so I ended up quitting about three weeks later. I asked my case manager if she could hook me up with jobs - plus, I started working with Jobs-Plus. They found me a job working for Caminar at Redwood House.
My case manager at the time, Synda, told me "I really think you will be a great candidate to move up into Transitional," which is an 18-month independent living program. So I went to Transitional and stayed my 18 months. I have been employed now for 1 year and 9 months, working for Caminar. I really enjoy my work. At 18 months my program was over so I went to this other program called YAIL and am continuing to move forward.
